I am teaching a workshop called "Introduction to Quilting with a Modern Aesthetic" at Arrowmont in a few weeks. Modern quilting is a new and rapidly growing movement in the quilting world. Modern quilters honor tradition, but also aim to create quilts that reflect their own personality and style. This workshop will explore different ways of creating modern quilts including a variety of improvisational piecing techniques and drawing from traditional quilt blocks as inspiration. The class will also discuss the role of color, symmetry or asymmetry, negative space, and composition in quilts. Students will make many quilt blocks and complete a small quilt during the workshop. All levels are welcome. Basic sewing experience is helpful, but not necessary.
