ISAAC Color Wheel Quilt

Who doesn’t love a color wheel? Making this stunning wall quilt is a great way to practice looking at color as it forces you to organize color by value and hue. If you’re up for a challenge, go for the 72 color color wheel. It uses 6 values each of the 12 steps around a traditional color wheel. For an equally gorgeous but quicker quilt, make the 36 color version. Use your favorite solids, prints, or a combination!

Fun fact: Sir Isaac Newton developed the first color wheel in the mid-1600s, a result of his experiments observing light pass through a prism.

Full size templates, illustrated instructions (including bias binding), color vocabulary, color exercises, encouragement

Materials:
36 color Color Wheel
1/4 yard or fat quarter* of each color: 3 values from dark to light of Red, Red Orange, Orange, Yellow Orange, Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, Blue Green, Blue, Blue Violet, Violet, Red Violet

72 color Color Wheel
1/4 yard or fat quarter* of each color: 6 values from dark to light of Red, Red Orange, Orange, Yellow Orange, Yellow, Yellow Green, Green, Blue Green, Blue, Blue Violet, Violet, Red Violet

* Each color for both quilts will fit on a fat eighth if you can find it and would prefer less leftover fabric.

Both Versions
7” square (white, cream, gray, or black)
backing: 3 1/8 yards
binding: 1/2 yard
batting: 52” x 52”
hand sewing needle, cardstock or template plastic

To make my color wheel quilt I used the Painter’s Palette solids by Paintbrush Studios in the following colors:
Yellow - yarrow, pencil yellow, daisy, bright yellow, banana, citrus yellow
Yellow Green - hunter, wasabi, green sheen, frolic, lemon ice, honeydew
Green - forest, android, emerald, paradise, jolly, agave
Blue Green - teal, gulf stream, jade, pale aqua, aruba, limelight
Blue - abyss, cadet, lapis, danube, river, monaco
Blue violet - patriot, royal, french blue, waterfall, daydream, cracked ice
Violet - royalty, grape, amethyst, iris, lavender, sachet
Red Violet - bordeaux, wine, fuchsia, violet, orchid, thistle
Red - claret, crimson, raspberry, blush, coral, pale pink
Red Orange - poppy red, tomato, bittersweet, lipstick, verbena, salmon
Orange - burnt sienna, burnt orange, carrot, dare devil, amber, apricot
Yellow Orange - canyon, bronze, curry, tangerine, clementine, peach
